Protect your heart with a healthy smile

 

February is American Heart Month and serves as a reminder to eat healthy and exercise to reduce your chances of developing heart disease and having a stroke. But did you know that having healthy gums can also reduce your risk?

It’s estimated that more than 82 million Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. That’s one in every three people. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and stroke is the number three killer.

Recent studies, however, suggest that people with periodontal or gum disease may be more at risk for heart disease and stroke. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without it.

The good news is gum disease is preventable. You can keep your gums healthy by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting your dentist twice a year. Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums, gums that pull away from your teeth or persistent bad breath can be indicators that you have gum disease, and you should contact your dentist for an exam.
