It’s National Truck Driver Appreciation and Wellness Week! The men and women in the transportation industry have an enormous impact on our daily lives, ensuring that we have the products and services needed to make our world run smoothly. Here are a few tips for all of us to help drivers in our cities and nationwide to keep our roads safe:
- Do not cut in front of large vehicles. It takes more time and distance for a truck to stop when compared with cars. A safe rule of thumb is to wait to pass until the entire cab is visible in your rear-view mirror.
- Do not pass a truck making a right turn on the right side. Most large trucks make wide right turns, leaving what looks like enough space to pass. This space is not for passing. Trucks must swing wide to complete a right turn safely.
- Stay out of blind spots. Trucks have much larger blind spots, due to their size. Pass trucks as quickly as possible while maintaining a constant speed.
- Keep a safe distance. Trucks move differently than cars, particularly in adverse weather. In windy conditions, they may have difficulty maintaining their lane and in wet conditions, trucks need an even greater distance to come to a safe stop.
Thank you to all of the drivers and transportation industry employees who work every day to keep our country running!
