Con-way Truckload: In case you missed it, we launched a new program “True To The Troops” on May 1st to honor our veteran drivers, do you have any questions about transitioning to trucking from the military? https://youtu.be/_u-svDD7MBI

Q. Hi, can you tell me a few things that Con-way Truckload does for the Troops?

Con-way Truckload: Thank you for asking. We have a variety of programs to support our military, they fall in two categories: charity and recruiting. We are the national transportation sponsor of HOLY JOE’S CAFE, a group that provides coffee to our troops overseas, reaching 35 different countries. We are currently honored to pull The Wall That Heals Vietnam memorial in the Michigan, Illinois and Indiana area this week-we will be with the Wall in other parts of the country later this year. We also sponsor Wreaths Across America and will donate to that group closer to the fall. We have a True to the Troops campaign and recognize our military veteran employees internally as well… 16% of our employees have military experience.

Q. If I am a Veteran, or even Active Duty, How can Con-way Truckload help me transition into becoming a Professional Truck Driver?

Con-way Truckload: For recruiting we have a number of great programs to help new drivers transition from the military to working with Con-way Truckload. We partner with U.S. Army Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) Program and Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program as well asFASTPORT to help recently separated military personnel find the right job. Through our Con-way Truckload Military Apprenticeship Program qualifying veterans or reservists who choose to start truck driving careers with Con-way Truckload as students can use their GI Bill benefits to supplement their income up to $1,000/month in their first year of employment. We also have a Driver Certification Program: Drivers with recent military driving experience and a CDL will be considered for our Driver Certification program in Joplin, MO. Upon completion, the driver trains with a Driver Trainer for 7,500 miles and can quickly transition to the experienced driver pay scale. Call to speak with a recruiter to see if you qualify.

Q. That’s awesome. What’s the number to speak to a recruiter?

Con-way Truckload: 866-437-4956

Con-way Truckload:  New to the field? We put together a over-the-road driving 101 that may answer some of your questions! http://true2blue.com/over-the-road-101-the-basics-of-long-…/

Q: I have had  my CDL since 2012 but have done only local, never OTR, can I join as a student driver?

Q: How do I get credit for recruiting drivers?

Con-way Truckload: Have new drivers give their recruiter your name and employee ID. Referral bonuses are a great way to make some extra money!

Con-way Truckload: We frequently get asked about benefits for drivers. Con-way Truckload is pleased to offer group medical, 401k, life insurance policy, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, a free rider program and more!

Q: Satellite radio is great!! Thanks for looking out for the drivers Con-way!

Con-way Truckload: Thanks; glad you’re enjoying it! What is your favorite thing to listen to?

January 19th, 2015

Our most recent LIVE Facebook chat took place on December 9th, 2014 and we were pleased to welcome Josh Landers, Military Advocate & Recruiter as our guest for the chat. Josh came to the transportation industry in 2012 after serving in the U.S. Army.

Check out the transcript below for some of Josh’s insights. Remember: you can always ask us questions on Facebook or Twitter, just include #ConwayTL in your post or post to our Facebook page!

Con-way Truckload: Josh has been part of the recruiting team for two years and specifically attends our military recruiting events to spread the word about our military programs.

Josh Landers: I did eight years in the Army as a Scout with multiple deployments. My highest award received is a purple heart.

Q. Do you have a program for Veterans?

Con-way Truckload: Absolutely. You can learn more here or give us a call at 866-265-2617.

Josh Landers: Josh here! If you would like another resource for transitioning veterans into the trucking industry, click here.

Q. I drove in the military, would I receive credit for that experience?

Con-way Truckload: Yes, please call for details concerning your MOS

Fastport Trucking Track: If you drove in the past 12 months you may qualify to get your military skills waiver and get the credit you deserve.

Q. What are the miles for solo drivers and what benefits do you offer?

Con-way Truckload: Solo OTR average miles are 2,500 a week. Group medical, 401k, regional and dedicated runs available and much more. Please call 866-265-2617

Q. Why should I pick Con-way over all the other companies?

Con-way Truckload: Great home time, great benefits, open access to executive management and a driver advocate. Plus, everyone looks good in blue!

Q. How do those drive cams work, and can they disengage it?

Con-way Truckload: The DriveCam in upgraded student trucks is not directly integrated with the truck system. It is triggered by moving events or manually if the driver choses to click and initiate the single event recording. However, only 12 seconds of video are captured at any one time. After 90 days in upgrade we work to route the student back for DriveCam removal. Of course, if any driver requests adding a DriveCam to their truck we are happy to oblige.

Q. Josh, is this a good time for drivers to be looking for work, with the holidays fast approaching?

Con-way Truckload: Absolutely! There is more freight in the system at this time of year and we guarantee our drivers get home on Christmas day.

Q. True2Blue is one of the very best for vets that want to get into the industry. Can you tell us about how the training program for an NCO with no military driving experience works?

Con-way Truckload: Thanks for the question! We will offer paid training towards a CDL program with a guaranteed placement upon completion. Anyone interested can call us at 866-265-2617 to learn more!

Q. That is awesome! Are there certain states this is available in?

Con-way Truckload: Yes, our training partner for this program is at Crowder College here in Joplin, MO. We can also partner with Central Tech in OK.

Q. Josh, my husband is an Army vet. His MOS Is 88M. Transportation. With only applying and adding his experience will he most likely be recruited?

Con-way Truckload: Yes absolutely, and he would actually come over at the top of our beginner pay scale with that experience.

Q. What is the pay for solo drivers?

Con-way Truckload: Here is a graphic showing our current pay structure. Military drivers also come in at the top of our pay scale and we offer an additional $1035 per month for GI bill benefits.

Con-way Truckload: We run all 48, Canada optional. We have a variety of bonuses including a quarterly safety bonus, annual productivity bonus and referral bonus with additional cash contest (taxes paid–our favorite!).

Josh Landers: Through the military I traveled to 17 different countries. I liked the food in Germany the best!
